PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) - Dozens gathered Tuesday night in Phenix City to pray for the victims of the Louisiana movie theater shooting, as well as the family of the local man who committed the horrific act.
The event at Nichols Chapel AME Church was called a healing and restoration prayer service.
Accused shooter John "Rusty" Houser lived in Phenix City for several years. Mayor Eddie Lowe was among those attending the service. He says it's important that the victim's families know that the East Alabama community grieves with them.
"Whether black, white, rich or poor we are somebody's child. The victims at Louisiana were somebody's children. And we want to show the world that people of Phenix City has a heart," said Lowe.
Churches from the Tri Cities as well as the local chapter of the NAACP all participated in the prayer vigil.
