Osteopathic school welcomes first class at Auburn University

AUBURN, AL (WTVM) - Future doctors have a new place to go at Auburn University. On Thursday, the new Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine at AU welcomed its first class.

Leaders with VCOM, as it's called, are excited about collaborating with Auburn University and the East Alabama Medical Center. The goal is to make a difference locally and throughout the world as they train the new doctors.

"It is not our goal to turn out surgeons for Beverly Hills. We are understood in southern Appalachia and meeting an unmet need for people most in need," VCOM Board of Directors Chairman John Rocovich Jr. said.

"To see the students walk across the threshold was a wonderful thing and a historic event," VCom President Dixie Tooke-Rawlins said.

This is the 3rd VCOM branch in the U.S. The other two are located in Blacksburg, Va. and Spartanburg, South Carolina.
