PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) - A Phenix City man has been arrested after false reporting to the police.
On August 3 at approximately 10:10 a.m., Edward Bell reported an alleged armed robbery to one of his family members that had occurred in the parking lot of K-Mart in Phenix City.
Upon responding officer's arrival, there were already several family members already on the scene.
Bell reported that he made a sizable cash withdrawal from a nearby banking institution.
He claimed that when he was in the area of the parking lot, a blue Dodge Charger approached him from behind and a black male subject got out and approached him.
He stated that the subject made a statement "you know what this is." Bell then alleged to have given the subject his cash.
Upon further investigation, it was determined that Bell had not made a cash withdrawal as stated and when interviewed admitted the robbery allegation was false.
Bell was arrested and charged with false reporting to law enforcement.
The Phenix City Police Department would like to stress to the citizens the importance of making a false report. This occupies resources that can't respond to an actual emergency, and places officers and the public in dangerous situations while searching for perpetrators.
The Phenix City Police Department does not take this lightly and will aggressively pursue prosecution for individuals reporting false incidents to the police.
