PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) – Phenix City Coroner Arthur Sumbry Jr. has identified the man who was struck and killed on Hwy. 80 W Tuesday morning as 33-year-old Joseph Williams of Phenix City.
Williams was reportedly struck by two different vehicles, according to a Phenix City Police Department press release.
The Russell County coroner confirmed that Williams was hit by a vehicle around 5:45 a.m on Tuesday. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the coroner at 7:30 a.m.
The incident happened near the Marathon gas station, located at 3834 Hwy. 80 in Phenix City.
Police state that Williams was attempting to run across the five-lane roadway when he was hit by a Buick SUV traveling eastbound on Hwy. 80 W. The driver of this vehicle stopped following the incident to help the victim, who was lying in the westbound lane of Hwy. 80 W.
Before first responders arrived, however, a newer-model black pick-up truck reportedly struck the man while traveling westbound on Hwy. 80 W. The truck, according to the police, left the scene.
