COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - United Way says their school supply drive was a great success this year.
On Tuesday morning, volunteers with the "Stuff the Bus" drive loaded trucks at CharBroil with more than 2,200 backpacks.
The supplies inside went to kids in grades K-12 in Columbus Phenix City and Russell County.
United Way officials talked about how backpacks will go toward families living in poverty who can't afford the necessary materials.
"Last year was our first year we did 900 backpacks that benefited about 1300 children. This year we have more than exceeded our goal which was to try and double, but we have more than exceeded that," Terri Parodi with United Way.
United Way serves 50 programs and 27 agencies in the surrounding area.
