Prominent Columbus attorney and legal expert laid to rest

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Philanthropist and well-known Columbus attorney, Morton "Mort" Harris was laid to rest Wednesday.

A graveside service was held at Riverdale Cemetery for 81-year-old Harris, who died this week at an Atlanta hospital.

A partner at Hatcher-Stubbs law firm, Harris practiced law in Columbus for more than 50 years and served on the boards of directors of numerous businesses and charitable organizations.

His most recent philanthropic endeavor was the Morton A. and Judye S. Harris Scholarship Endowment Fund at Columbus State University.

Harris was a Columbus native and graduate of Columbus High School. He served as the current president of the Columbus High School Alumni association.

Former Columbus mayor and current Judge Bobby Peters described Harris as "someone that everyone in the legal community knew."

Harris is survived by his wife Judye, whom he was married to for 58 years, as well as his children and grandchildren.
