College students beware of dorm room hazards

AUBURN, AL (WTVM) – Colleges dormitories all over the country are gearing up for a massive amount of students to move back in for the fall semester.

In Auburn, nearly 5,000 college students live in residence halls on the Auburn University campus. For some, this will be their first time living away from home.

Students need to be aware of certain fire hazards and other dorm safety tips. Students are prohibited from bringing anything with an open flame (hot plates, candles, and incense) because if left unattended it could start a fire.

Students are allowed to bring items like microwaves, mini refrigerators, and Keurig coffee makers.

AU Housing does hold periodic fire drills to make sure students are prepared in case of a fire emergency. Move-in dates for AU students are August 7 and August 13.
