FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) – As they announce when classes will start for students on post, Fort Benning confirmed on Thursday that one of their oldest schools will close its doors at the end of the upcoming school year.
Fort Benning School officials recently told faculty members of Frank R. Loyd Elementary School that the school will be closing at the end of the 2015-16 school year.
Loyd, which was built in 1958 and is one of the oldest schools on post, has had a declining enrollment over the years.
The post does plan to build two new schools that are larger and house more students, and says they will offset the closure.
Construction for the new McBride Elementary is currently underway, and can accommodate 650 students when it's completed by the end of this year. The other new school, E.A. White, will be completed at the end of 2016, and will accommodate 600 students.
School officials will officially announce the closing of Loyd, and plans for redistricting and rezoning to parents during open house events held at each school.
The open house events will give parents an opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback on the plan, which will in turn be used for the way ahead.
The dates for each school are:
- Dexter: Aug. 27 @ 6 p.m.
- Faith: Sept. 2 @ 6 p.m.
- Loyd: Aug. 25 @ 6 p.m.
- McBride: Aug. 27 @ 5:30 p.m.
- Stowers: Aug. 27 @ 6 p.m.
- White: August. 27 @ 5:30 p.m.
- Wilson: Aug. 27 @ 5:30 p.m.
