A rising high school senior is dead after a hit and run this morning on Steam Mill road in Columbus. Police say they believe a Volvo sedan hit Romel Dill. They are now searching for the vehicle, which is missing the passenger door outside mirror. The corner says Dill was jogging down Steam Mill Road, conditioning for school sports.
He was going to be a senior this year at Kendrick High School. Akear Mewborn says Dill was in her American Literature class last year and would often stop by her classroom to check in with her.
She says he was excited about his part time job at McDonald’s on Buena Vista Road and couldn't wait to graduate. When she heard the news Thursday morning, she was devastated. "I just said Lord please don't let it be one of our children and when they released the name my heart just sunk because I just saw him yesterday and he was really excited about registering for school and possibly being on the baseball team and he had his whole life ahead of him,” says Mewborn.
The hit and run happened around 7 a.m. on Thursday. Police say the initial cause of death is listed as blunt force trauma with a possible broken neck. His body will be transported to Atlanta for an autopsy.
