LaFayette man dies after weekend shooting

LAFAYETTE, AL (WTVM) - An Opelika man has been arrested in connection to a shooting over the weekend that claimed another man's life.

The LaFayette Police Department responded to the 600 block of MLK Drive on Sunday Aug. 9 at approximately 3:23 reference to shots fired.

Upon arrival, officers discovered 20-year-old LaMarcus DeShawn Hardnett with a gunshot wound to the head. Hardnett was airlifted to Columbus Medical Center and died from his injuries on Tuesday Aug. 11.

Witnesses on the scene identified 24-year-old Santavius Quamez Core of Opelika as the shooter. Core was taken into custody shortly after and booked in the Chambers County Detention Facility.

Core is charged with murder, discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling, and discharging a firearm inside corporate limits.

The investigation is still pending and further charges could be added.
