FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) – On Saturday, Fort Benning will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the U.S. airborne.
In 1940, the War Department approved the formation of a test platoon of the Airborne Infantry. The test platoon was made-up of volunteers from Fort Benning's 29th Infantry Regiment.
Less than two months later the group made their first jump over Lawson Army Airfield.
Festivities will take place over Lawson Army Airfield on Saturday, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Parachuters will jump from two Blackhawk helicopters, and two Globemasters, and one Hercules.
Also, a group of civilian World War II airborne re-enactors called the Liberty Jump team, will parachute onto Lawson Army Airfield.
