Hearing rescheduled for suspect in Columbus woman's death

VALLEY, AL (WTVM) – The suspect in the disappearance and murder of a Columbus woman last month has been given a scheduled date for a preliminary hearing.

Stacey Gray will appear before a Chambers County judge Sept. 29 at 9 a.m. CST. His hearing was originally scheduled for Sept. 1.

He is charged with capital murder and capital murder rape in the death of Renee Eldridge, of Columbus.

Grey, 45, is accused of kidnapping Eldridge, 25, from her Columbus home the morning of the July 4 before police say he eventually beat her to death.

Eldridge's body was found in a creek on July 7 in Valley, AL. Gray was captured on July 14 following an extensive manhunt.

The Chambers County District Attorney's office tells News Leader 9 they will seek the death penalty in the capital murder case of Gray.

The upgraded charges mean that if Gray is convicted, he faces life in prison or lethal injection. Gray remains detained at the Chambers County Detention Center.
