Man charged in daughter's death to appear in court

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - On August 16 at approximately 11:40 a.m., Columbus Police Department Patrol units responded to 5409 Shanna Court in reference to a deceased 5-month-old baby.

Upon arrival officers discovered a female baby, later identified as Summer Barfield, lying face up in a recliner chair deceased.

Columbus EMS also responded to the scene along with the Deputy Coroner Charles Newton, where Newton pronounced Summer deceased.

Robbery and Assault-Homicide unit responded to the scene and assumed the investigation.

Detectives interviewed Summer's father, Troy Barfield who stated that prior to going to bed, he wrapped his daughter in a comforter tightly with only her head exposed, laid her in a chair on her side and placed a pillow behind her back, then he went to sleep.

At some point during the night, police say Summer rolled onto her face suffocating herself and was found the next morning by her grandfather, deceased. Investigators say that due to Barfield's "careless actions," which contributed to Summer's death, warrants were obtained for his arrest.

Barfield was arrested at the Public Safety Building on Aug. 18 and transported to the county jail.

He has been charged with cruelty to children in the first degree and involuntary manslaughter.

Barfield is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in Recorders Court on August 20 at 9 a.m.
