COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

A shooting at Elizabeth Canty Homes sent a toddler to the hospital on Wednesday night.

Officials say a 19-month-old boy was shot in the hand shortly after 6:30 p.m. and was taken to the Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Columbus investigators tell us the incident started when the mother called 911 and said someone in a black Honda Accord did a drive-by shooting and her baby was shot.

However, after further investigation they determined victim’s 5-year-old brother got a gun from a room in the back of the Columbus apartment and accidentally shot his 19-month-old brother.

Police say the mother, 20-year-old Dakina Fortson, has been arrested and is being taken over to the Muscogee County Jail on charges of false report of a crime and reckless conduct.

No other charges are pending.

She is scheduled to appear in Recorders Court on Friday at 9 a.m. In the meantime, the 5-year-old has been turned over to his grandmother.
