LEE COUNTY, AL (WTVM) -

The St. Matthews Missionary Baptist Church in Lee County held a ground breaking ceremony Monday after a fire destroyed the church in late July.

Church members, with shovels in hand, broke ground on the new building where one of the oldest churches in Lee County once stood for more than 140 years.

The church property is located along Lee Rd.10 near Bee Hive Rd. In an interview with WTVM on July 27, Pastor Dexter Foreman told us that he is brokenhearted, but faithful God has a plan for them. He also said they did have insurance.

There is no timetable to when the new church will be rebuilt. An account is set up at Auburn Bank for those who would like to donate to the church.
