COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - A Columbus man accused of shooting his pregnant girlfriend in the face appeared in court early Tuesday.
Blake Houze and Judge Michael Selinsky went back and forth Tuesday morning in the courtroom. The exchange started as soon as the judge asked Houze where his attorney was.
Judge Selinsky told Houze he was proceeding with the case despite his attorney not being there. Houze said he was defenseless without his attorney and questioned the constitutionality of that decision.
A plea of not guilty was entered and four Columbus police officers testified that the victim said David Steinberg shot her. Detectives showed her a picture of Houze and she identified him as the shooter.
Authorities say he shot his girlfriend on July 5 at the Brighton Park Apartments on Warm Springs Road.
Houze has a list of charges including aggravated assault, false imprisonment armed robbery, burglary, theft by taking, aggravated battery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
