Suspect dead after officer-involved shooting in Sylacauga

SYLACAUGA, AL (WBRC) -

Authorities are investigating an officer-involved shooting that left one suspect dead in Sylacauga on Saturday afternoon.

The incident happened at the intersection of Woodlawn Avenue and West 8th Street between 1:30 and 2 p.m.

According to an official with the Talladega County Sheriff's Office, a male suspect was shot during some kind of altercation. The identity of the suspect, who died from his injuries, has not been released. According to family at the scene of the incident, the suspect was 23 years old.

The deputy involved has also not been identified, but the Sheriff's office says he was not injured in the incident.

Other people were reportedly with the suspect at the time of the shooting, but no other details were made available about their involvement, if any.

The TCSO has turned the case over to the State of Alabama Law Enforcement Agency for further investigation.

    An Opelika man is getting ready to compete in the Summer Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil this August.  Monzavious Edwards, 35, will be the oldest competitor in the 100-meter dash, representing Nigeria.  Edwards graduated from Opelika High School, his dual citizenship has allowed him to compete nine times for the U.S. and Nigeria in the World Championships and Pan American games.  It took him 16 years to get to the Olympics, but never lost sight of his dream.  &quo...More >>

    Columbus Mayor Teresa Tomlinson is responding after two well-known local activists were arrested this weekend at a protest in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. Officials say NAACP Columbus chapter president Tonza Thomas and community activist Marquese "Skinny" Averett led the crowd into the intersection of Veterans Parkway and 10th Street blocking oncoming traffic.
