Suspect dead after officer-involved shooting in Sylacauga

SYLACAUGA, AL (WBRC) -

Authorities are investigating an officer-involved shooting that left one suspect dead in Sylacauga on Saturday afternoon.

The incident happened at the intersection of Woodlawn Avenue and West 8th Street between 1:30 and 2 p.m.

According to an official with the Talladega County Sheriff's Office, a male suspect was shot during some kind of altercation. The identity of the suspect, who died from his injuries, has not been released. According to family at the scene of the incident, the suspect was 23 years old.

The deputy involved has also not been identified, but the Sheriff's office says he was not injured in the incident.

Other people were reportedly with the suspect at the time of the shooting, but no other details were made available about their involvement, if any.

The TCSO has turned the case over to the State of Alabama Law Enforcement Agency for further investigation.

    Russell County Sheriff Heath Taylor, a nearly 30- year veteran who was shot in the line of duty in 2003, said it makes him sick to his stomach to see what’s happening across the country and to know that whatever happened in another city, whether the officer was wrong or whether he was justified.
