COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) – A business mogul and current television 'Shark' is scheduled to appear at the City of Columbus's Martin Luther King Day celebrations next year.
Daymond John, the CEO and found of FUBU and member of the panel on ABC's Shark Tank will appear at the Jan. 16, 2016 MLK: The Dream Lives Unity Commemoration.
"We feel Daymond John's success story is inspirational to people of all ages and his perspective on diversity and overcoming challenges in an increasingly diverse world will be something many will want to hear," says Mayor Teresa Tomlinson. "Mr. John exhibits the Dream in this new era and we are fortunate he will be coming to Columbus to share his thoughts on these important matters with our community", said Tomlinson. "His story is amazing, and it's one of the reasons we wanted our audience to hear him."
The event is coordinated by Mayor Teresa Tomlinson's Commission on Unity, Diversity and Prosperity, now in its third year.
The Dream Lives event is a community festival that gathers a diverse group to celebrate the continued importance and relevancy of Dr. Martin Luther King's dream of unity, equality and justice for all people regardless of race, classification or economic status.
The commemoration event in 2015 drew almost 2,000 attendees that included both civic and religious groups, school bands, youth groups, sororities, fraternities and the general public. The event features a processional of all these groups to the Liberty Theater, an MLK 5K and other activities.
"The Mayor's Commission on Unity, Diversity and Prosperity is comprised of over 25 civic and corporate individuals committed to the mission of ensuring that every citizen is valued and presented with equal access to opportunities. In the past, the commission has teamed up with WTVM and CSU to present forums on Diversity," a press release from the mayor's office said.
