FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) - Despite the efforts of local leaders, it looks as though Fort Benning is losing its 3rd Brigade.
The soldiers are being reassigned, and for all intents and purposes won't be coming back. The move was unavoidable because the Army was ordered to reduce its force.
But Gary Jones with the Columbus Chamber of Commerce says hope is not lost.
"We accept what is and we're fighting for the future, and the future is we want a brigade back there. We're not giving up on the idea of having a brigade there, but we've got to get it so that financial conditions improve so the force can grow, and once the force grows, we want that first growth to occur at Fort Benning, Georgia," Gary Jones said, Executive VP Military Affairs.
Jones says the chamber is still seeking signatures on its petition to fight sequestration. He encourages those who haven't done so to log onto the website growbenning.com.
