Phenix City man shot, killed overnight Monday

PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) – A man was shot and killed in Phenix City overnight Monday, according to Russell County Coroner Arthur Sumbry, Jr. 

The victim has been identified as 23-year-old Rakiem Jones. Jones sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the body and was pronounced dead at 6:30 a.m., Sumbry, Jr. confirmed.  

The shooting happened at Legacy Estates in Phenix City near building 307. 

According to a Phenix City Police Department report, a 911 call made at 3:31 a.m. saying that a gun shot was heard in the 600 block of 6th Place.

Once outside, the caller saw a black male bleeding from his abdomen and advised there was a medic en route. There was no one seen running from the area following the shots.

Jones' body has been sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Science for the autopsy. The Phenix City Police Department is investigating the crime.
