CSU students get lesson on ISIS, radical Islam

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The Columbus State University community got an up-close and personal lesson on radical Islam Monday evening.

Professor and author Daveed Gartenstein-Ross spoke at the Cunningham Center. Gartenstein-Ross is an expert on ISIS and radical Islam and author of the book My Year inside Radical Islam.

The book details how Gartenstein-Ross converted to Islam when he went off to college and then became a radical follower of the religion, even holding fund-raising events for groups associated with Al-Qaeda.

Now an expert on the topic, he says there are no clear solutions when dealing with ISIS and radical Islam.

"Every decision has been made in light of past decisions. In part how we handled the Arab Spring which helped to spread chaos instead of stability. Right now I think what we need to understand is that this is a movement that is not going away anytime soon," Gartenstein-Ross said.

This lecture program was part of the Richard R. Hallock Series.
