COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Many people in the area have had some sort of loss this year, and will go into the holiday season dealing with sadness.
Licensed counselor Catherine Cox, who also works with Gentiva Hospice, visited our studios to talk about a grief support program to help cope with loss during the holidays.
"It's to help anyone in the community who may be going through a loss, whether it's a divorce, whether it's a death in the family," Cox said. 'It's a way of learning to cope with the grief through the holiday season."
Cox explained that physical and emotional triggers can lead to depression during the holidays.
"What we're going to do is looking at planning the holidays for people who are going through grief, not only for adults but for children and adolescents, ways to handle that grief and prepare for the holiday and make the very best of it and hopefully have some closure and possibly even memorialize the person that you've lost," Cox said.
The free program will be held at Gentiva Hospice at 100 Brookstone Centre Parkway on Thursday, November 12 from 5 to 6 p.m.
Cox said they will supply everything, so attendants do not need to bring anything.
"It's a very safe group to deal with your thoughts and your feelings and to prepare for the holiday grief," Cox said.
