(WTVM) – On this Veterans Day, we honor those who have received the nation’s highest award for valor, the Medal of Honor.

Retired Sgt. Maj. Benny Adkins of Opelika was awarded his medal in a ceremony at the White House last year.

Adkins is one of three recipients locally from the Vietnam War.

Another is Spc. Donald Johnston who was honored posthumously. His buried at Fort Benning's Post Cemetery, alongside with World War II recipient Col. Robert Nett.

Platoon Sgt. Matthew Leonard was also honored posthumously. He is buried at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery in Russell County, AL.

Since World War Two, more than eight hundred men *and one woman* have been awarded the Medal of Honor.
