PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) - A Phenix City Council member is one of multiple people who have qualified for the race to fill the Alabama House seat vacated by Representative Lesley Vance's death.
Phenix City council member Chris Blackshear and Russell County Engineer James McGill along with Tommy Pugh have qualified within the Republican Party.
Kenecia Battle has qualified to run on the Democratic ticket for the District 80 seat.
We caught up with Councilman Blackshear to get his thoughts on the election.
"I just think it's important to give back to the community and Rep. Vance has done such a great job over the last 20 years when he was our representative in the state house," Blackshear said. "And I just felt like now was a time to carry on what he started, build upon that and give back to the citizens of District 80."
