COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Hundreds of women gathered for the United Way fourth annual women's leadership luncheon Power of the Purse on Wednesday.
The luncheon is held as a way to learn about the needs of women in the Chattahoochee Valley.
Those in attendance brought bras and underwear to donate to local women in need.
"This is our fourth annual event," explained Dorenda Weaver, chairperson for the event. "This year we have 616 women so it was a sold out event. We're really excited for all those that are here, and also for those who donated garments who couldn't be here today. So it was a lot of community support."
Inspirational speaker Barbara Dooley served as the featured guest speaker. Dooley is an author, radio and television personality, and nonprofit volunteer. She has served as past campaign chair for the United Way of Northeast Georgia.
A meet and greet with Barbara Dooley was held before the luncheon and gave invitees an opportunity to witness her strength and engage with her personally.
Scott Ferguson President & CEO of United Way discussed the success of the "Power of the Purse" and how significantly the number of support increases the number of women helping women in the community.
"Chattahoochee Valley women in need will no longer wonder where to get vouchers from agencies that provide these essential items," said Ferguson. "All they will have to do is continue to spread the good news of the impact that WLC is doing to provide the help women need."
The program also showed how the organization promotes helping woman in need.
