AUBURN, AL (WTVM) - One church is making sure those who are less fortunate are able to enjoy a meal with their families this Thanksgiving.
Auburn United Methodist Church opened its food pantry 15 years ago. On their first Thanksgiving, they handed out just six turkeys. This year, they're handing out close to 500.
There were lots of hugs and smiles on Friday as hundreds of volunteers worked together to load up cars up with turkeys and a brown box with all the fixings.
For many of the volunteers, helping those who would otherwise go hungry is more than just doing a good deed, it's their passion.
"Every time we put a turkey in someone's car there will be children families sitting around a table and God's love from our church will be manifested to them through that meal," said senior minister George Mathison.
The church is already preparing to provide families with dinners for Christmas. This food pantry serves more than 50 families on a weekly basis throughout the year.
