AUBURN, AL (WTVM) - One of Auburn University's most popular alums and football stars is returning to his alma mater this weekend.
Cam Newton was named an honorary captain for the Iron Bowl on Saturday and will join Auburn's captains midfield for the coin toss before the game.
In 2010, Newton and the Tigers won the BCS National Championship, beating out the Oregon Ducks 22-19. He won the Heisman Trophy that same year, becoming the third Auburn football player to receive the award.
Newton signed with the Carolina Panthers in 2011 and has been their starting quarterback since then.
The 2015 Iron Bowl kicks off Saturday, Nov. 28 at 3:30 p.m. ET on CBS.
