FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) - Even though Thanksgiving is still a few hours away, some soldiers at Fort Benning celebrated the holiday a little early.
On Wednesday, the post served a traditional Thanksgiving feast to allow soldiers the chance to celebrate Thanksgiving with their units and celebrate with their families on Thursday.
The post expects to serve more than 15,000 meals this week out of its 15 dining facilities.
Organizers say this meal is especially important for soldiers who can't be with their families over Thanksgiving.
"This year and every year, soldiers experience their first Thanksgiving away from home in the United States Army, and it's depressing for the soldiers to be away from home for the first time, but we try to make sure when they come through that door, they're already coming through wishing they could be at home, but when they see the feast we've prepared for them, they don't ever wanna go back, believe me."
Soldiers, retirees, and Family members are invited to participate in Thanksgiving dinner at the Airborne Dining Facility on Main Post from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday.
