PENSACOLA, FL (WTVM) - First half goals by Olivia Jarrell and Atalia Ramirez gave No. 3 Columbus State a lead it would never relinquish, as the Lady Cougars beat No. 5 Bridgeport (Conn.) 3-1 on Thursday in the NCAA Division II women's soccer national semifinals.
The game was played at the Brosnaham Soccer Complex in Pensacola, FL.
Jarrell's score came in the 21st minute off of a corner kick by senior Chelsea Person. The ball was knocked down in front of the net, and Jarrell corralled the rebound to get CSU on the board. It was her 17th goal of the season, tying the all-time season CSU freshman scoring mark.
Ramirez found the net in the 38th minute, taking a pass from Person and hammering it into the upper right corner of the net.
The Lady Cougars added one more in the second half, when a Person centering pass deflected off of a Bridgeport defender and into the net in the 64th minute.
CSU goalkeeper Maylyn Parson had seven saves, allowing one goal in the 88th minute, long after the issue was decided.
Top-ranked Grand Valley State defeated No. 2 Western Washington 3-2 in the other semifinal, setting up a national championship showdown between the Lady Cougars and two-time defending national champion Lady Lakers.
Kickoff for the title match is set for Saturday at 1 p.m. ET in Pensacola.
