COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Downtown Columbus is ready for the holidays as the group Best Buddies hosted its first annual Christmas tree lighting on the Riverwalk Thursday night.
Organizers say the event was modeled after the tree lighting ceremony in Rockefeller Center in New York. The tree was planted and will grow to be about 45 feet tall.
One of the people attending the event says the theme really goes along with what Best Buddies is all about.
"It really gives off a feel of togetherness, a sense of community and I hope with everybody's help, this organization can take off in the community," said Jake Loudermilk.
Best Buddies is a non-profit organization which serves to foster leadership development. It strives to create one-to-one friendships between individuals with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities.
