COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) – Columbus police have confirmed that a man was shot Monday morning in what law enforcement is investigating as a home invasion and forced entry.

According to the Muscogee County Coroner's Office, Edward Kirkland, 34, died following a gunshot wound to the chest.

Kirkland was pronounced dead at 9:11 a.m. Initial investigations indicate a home invasion and forced entry happened in the 4000 block of Valley Road off of University Avenue, according to police.

Columbus detectives said Kirkland was shot and taken to Midtown Medical Center and died.

A witness who lives at the home said Kirkland allegedly kicked the door down and came in the house.  A woman who lives at the house text messaged her father to tell him there had been a shooting.

"I was at work when I received the text message and I assumed that she was at her job when I received the message so, I thought there was a shooting at her job. Then later she said no, this is for real at home, so I rushed over," said Anthony Shumpert.

Shumpert's daughter told him this was a home invasion and the suspect was shot.

Both people who live at the home were taken to the police headquarters.

Details are limited at this time, but check back for more updates.
