Phenix City officials warn against holiday porch pirates

PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) - With Christmas just around the corner, many people are receiving last-minute package deliveries.

Phenix City officials say they have seen reports of so-called porch pirates, or people stealing unattended deliveries, right here in the valley.

It's a troubling crime across the country that many have caught on camera.

We spoke to FedEx representatives who say this time of the year is their busiest shipping season, and with last-minute deliveries coming in, people should pay extra attention to their deliveries.

"We've all seen those videos and unfortunately with the increase in e-commerce and online shopping, more and more packages are being shipped to residence, so we are seeing those thefts unfortunately," said FedEx representative Katie Wassmer.

FedEx recommends asking for a signature for your deliveries, as well as considering shipping your packages to a location you are typically at during the day- like your workplace or a friend's house.

They also encourage using mobile apps and online portals to customize your delivery experience.

This allows you to do things like ask your delivery person to hide a package under a plant or structure.
