Merger of AL community colleges will create more resources for students

PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) -

A consolidation is in the works for several Alabama community colleges, including two in the Chattahoochee Valley.

The Alabama Community College System Board recently approved the merger of seven colleges, including Chattahoochee Valley Community College in Phenix City and Southern Union State in Opelika.

The schools will merge with Central Alabama Community College in Alexander City.

Despite the change, officials stress that campuses will not be shut down and no one is being laid off.

They say this merger will create more resources for students and help the schools serve the students better.

The schools are expected to merge their athletic programs as well, meaning there will be one basketball team instead of three.
