AUBURN, AL (WTVM) - A $50 million redevelopment project in downtown Auburn that includes a new hotel, urban grocery store and parking deck has taken a giant step forward.
On Tuesday night, Auburn's City Council gave the green light to the project developer to begin working on the design.
The project would transform the Gay Street Parking Deck into a high end retail, restaurant and hotel destination.
Demolition could begin in January of 2017.
"We are talking about a hotel with about 150-170 rooms, urban grocery store maybe 30,000 feet and a five story parking deck with 750 parking spaces," explained Auburn city manager Charlie Duggan. "Not only does this replace the spaces we had, it adds public parking and includes parking for hotel and grocery store."
In April, the developer hopes to have a master plan and design ready for the city council to vote on.
We are told there is high interest from various hotels and grocery stores, and we could hear the final choice by April.
