2 arrested in connection to Riverland Dr. deadly shooting

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -   Columbus police have made two arrests in a shooting that took place on Riverland Drive in Columbus on Dec. 16, 2015.

According to Columbus police, 20-year-old Jaleel Merritt and 19-year-old Jacorion Gary were arrested on Jan. 8 in connection to the deadly shooting. 

On Dec. 16, 2015 police responded to 1811 Riverland Dr. where they found Darwyn Jaleel Taylor, 22, suffering from several gunshot wounds while inside a vehicle parked at that location.

Taylor died at the scene, and a 24-year-old man was found near in the area and he also suffered from gunshot wounds, however he survived his wounds.

An investigation revealed that Taylor and the 24-year-old had arranged to meet someone in the 1800 block of Riverland Drive to purchase a handgun. The person then got into the vehicle with Taylor and the 24-year-old.

The exchange turned into an attempted armed robbery, and Taylor and the other occupant were shot inside the vehicle. The 24-year-old managed to get out of the vehicle and flee the scene. 

Evidence at the scene indicated that shots were also fired outside the vehicle. Investigation identified two suspects in the incident, and murder warrants were issued for Jaleel Merritt and Jacorion Gary. 

Merritt and Gary were both additionally charged with two counts of criminal attempt armed robbery, two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and aggravated assault.
