COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Metropolitan Baptist Church hosted its annual Unity Week Memorial Service on Monday afternoon.
Mayor Teresa Tomlinson along with other city officials were in attendance, and honorable Judge Art Smith was the guest speaker.
The church was packed as people came together in song and prayer.
Pastor Curtis Crocket Jr. says this is a time to give back.
"This is not a day off it is a day to serve," Crockett said. "It may be a federal holiday, but there is something you can do. Somebody needs to be fed, somebody needs to be clothed."
There was also talk about the recent violence involving young people in the city.
The pastor encouraged those young people to serve and help others instead of resorting to violence.
