COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The Georgia Supreme Court has reversed the murder conviction of a man sentenced to life in prison.
Ulysses Wiggins was serving a sentence for shooting and killing Catherine Walker in 2008. The shooting took place at the Brickwood Apartments off of Talbotton Road in Columbus.
Witnesses said an enraged Wiggins shot Walker who was standing outside the apartments during an argument with his girlfriend who also lived there.
Court documents say the girlfriend Valorice Caples had left Wiggins because of abusive behavior.
Chief Justice, Hugh Thompson ruled that because Wiggins clearly said he wished to represent himself during the trial, but the request was denied, his sentence should be reversed.
The court also ruled Wiggins was not told of the consequences of exercising his constitutional rights.
