Chris Blackshear has won the special election for Alabama House District 80.

The special election was held Tuesday, Jan. 19 for the seat following the death of Representative Lesley Vance and was scheduled by Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley shortly after Vance passed away in November 2015.

Chris Blackshear, James McGill, and Tommy Pugh all vied to fill the vacant seat in District 80.

On Tuesday night, Blackshear received 1,652 votes, McGill received 766, and Pugh received 171 votes.

Blackshear will now wait to see if a Democratic candidate will run against him on April 12.

If no one steps up as a candidate, he will run unopposed and be sworn in on April 13 in Montgomery.
