CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

Parts of South Carolina are under a winter storm warning and a freezing rain advisory ahead of the first major winter storm of the season.

Some areas of the mid-Atlantic including Washington, D.C. and Baltimore could see up to two feet of snow or more, while significant icing is expected across North Carolina and Kentucky Friday into Saturday morning, according to Live 5 Meteorologist Justin Lock.

Winter storm warning issued for parts of South Carolina

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for much of northern South Carolina, including Oconee, Pickens, Greenville, Spartanburg, Cherokee, Union, York, Chester, Lancaster and Chesterfield Counties to be in effect from 1 a.m. Friday until 7 p.m. Saturday.

A freezing rain advisory will be in effect for Newberry, Fairfield, Kershaw, Lee, Darlington, Marlboro, Florence, Dillon, Marion and Horry counties from midnight Friday through 7 p.m. Saturday.

Forecasters say a strong storm system will develop along the gulf coast states and move off the Carolina coast Friday night and deepen.

A wintry mix will develop across the northern Midlands with the primary threat there being freezing rain late Thursday night through Friday. Light snow on Saturday is also possible in the Midlands, with significant icing likely that could result in treacherous travel conditions, forecasters say.

Biggest impact for Lowcountry likely travel plans

Anyone planning air travel to the north is likely to face delays or cancellations. Airports in Charlotte, Raleigh, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York City will be impacted by the winter storm. If you have travel plans, be sure to check with your airline for any last-minute weather-related changes.

Scattered showers are likely Thursday night in the Lowcountry with cloudy skies and lows in the 40s. For Friday, forecast models show scattered showers turning into moderate rain. There is a small chance that snow flurries or sleet could mix with rain by Saturday as the rain tapers off, Lock said. However, Lock said current models show no threat of accumulation or dangerous driving conditions for the Lowcountry.

The Live 5 First Alert team will continue to monitor the storm for changes into the weekend.
