Columbus woman arrested, charged with cruelty to children

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - A Columbus woman was arrested on Wednesday and charged with cruelty to children after her five children were found in poor condition.

According to police, five young children were found in a room alone at the Columbus Inn, located at 3170 Victory Drive in Columbus, by a maintenance worker around 12:30 p.m.

The children, ranging in ages of four months old to five years old, were found partially clothed with no diapers and no food.

Investigators found the mother, Lythea Smith, 24, walking on Victory Drive.

She was arrested and charged with five counts of cruelty to children. Smith will appear in recorder's court on Friday at 2 p.m.

The five children are now in the custody of Department of Family and Children Services.
