COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) – A former deputy of the Muscogee County Sheriff's Office was arrested on Monday, according to Muscogee County Sheriff John Darr.
The arrest follows an investigation that started more than a week ago. A female inmate claims Kennedy, who's been a Muscogee County sheriff's deputy for approximately four years, sexually assaulted her at the jail.
Kennedy is no longer employed with the sheriff's office. Sheriff Darr says he was terminated more than a week ago following a probe into the allegations.
Kennedy was charged with violation of oath by a public officer and sexual assault against a person in custody.
He was booked in the Muscogee County Jail and then transferred to the Harris County Jail for safety reasons.
Kennedy is scheduled to appear in municipal court this week.
