SUMTER COUNTY, GA (WTVM) - Sumter County Sheriff's officials say their tag readers are helping to make streets safer.
They say, this month alone, the readers have helped deputies stop 10 drivers. The readers catch things like expired tags, insurance violations, stolen cars and can even alert authorities to drivers who have outstanding warrants.
"That tag reader will actually read up to 6,000 tags an hour. There's no way in the world that I could take that radio and read 6,000 tags an hour and call them all in to dispatch," said Donald Williams with the Sumter County Sheriff's office.
The tag readers cost about $25,000, and the sheriff's office hopes to purchase another set soon.
