COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) – Glaucoma is the leading cause of vision loss and blindness in the U.S. so to help raise awareness, January is Glaucoma Awareness month.
Dr. Paula Walker-King tells us that what makes glaucoma so difficult to diagnose is the fact that it has no symptoms in the early stages.
Glaucoma is a buildup of fluid in the eye, which causes damage to the optic nerve. The fluid elevates eye pressure and can damage your vision.
Glaucoma is preventable by regular yearly eye exams.
Those at risk for glaucoma include:
-African-Americans over age 40
-Everyone over 60
-People with a family history of the disease
