Former Phenix City councilman and District 80 state representative-elect Chris Blackshear says he could be sworn in to office as soon as one week from Tuesday, the opening day of the Alabama legislative session.

According to Blackshear, that's if the state Democratic Party does not find a candidate to run against him by this Friday at 1 p.m. Eastern time.

Blackshear won last Tuesday's primary election to fill the vacant seat formally held by longtime legislator Lesley Vance, who passed away in November.

Blackshear beat out two other Republican candidates.
