COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD, is a digestive disorder that affects the ring of muscle between the esophagus and stomach.
GERD can cause issues such as heartburn. A lot people think acid is the problem, but acid is actually a good thing because it kills bacteria. The problem with acid is that it's not supposed to go up into the esophagus, according to Dr. Paul Cartwright with Columbus Regional Health.
One way to treat GERD is through a new FDA approved LINX ring.
"This ring goes around the esophagus and it expands, allowing food to go in, and it then snaps shut and keeps the acid in to where it's supposed to go," Dr. Cartwright stated.
