LAGRANGE, GA (WTVM) - A convicted murderer who escaped from a work detail in LaGrange is back behind bars.
U.S. Marshal officials say 65-year-old James Michael Beggett was arrested late Thursday afternoon at a truck stop in Montgomery by the fugitive task force.
A statewide search for Beggett was launched Wednesday after he failed to return to the Charles T. Hudson Transitional Center in LaGrange following a work detail.
In 1981, Beggett was convicted of murder in Chatham County and sentenced to life in prison.
Corrections officials say he had recently been moved to the transitional center awaiting parole.
Authorities say Beggett was arrested in Montgomery around 4:30 Thursday afternoon without incident.
