COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - People came together on Saturday to call for an end to violence plaguing the Columbus community.
The Peace and Unity Coalition held a Unity Peace Walk to bring awareness to the issue.
Organizers say ending the violence will take the community as a whole – everyone must be involved. They say they just want the community to be a decent place to live for everyone.
"I believe that people realize it is time for us to stand up and do something about the violence that is happening in our community," said Marquese Averett, president of the Young Minority Leaders. "Not one person can do it alone, it has to be a communal effort. If everybody just do their part, we can do some amazing things."
Our crew on the scene said at least a thousand people showed up for the Unity Peace Walk, which is how many participants that organizers say they were hoping to have.
