SEGMENT: Health with Dr. Paula - What is the Zika virus?

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) – More than 30 people in the U.S. have been infected by the Zika virus. Dr. Paula Walker-King stopped by News Leader 9 Morning explains what the virus is.

Zika virus is spread to people through mosquito bites, not spread human to human.

Symptoms of the virus include:

  • fever
  • rash
  • joint pain
  • conjunctivitis (red eyes)
  • Babies and pregnant women are most susceptible to getting the Zika virus.
  • Prevention tips include:
  • avoid travel overseas (especially pregnant women)
  • wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants if working outside
  • stay in places with screens or air conditioning
  • use EPA registered insect repellants
