Muscogee County’s Special Olympics team hits the lanes

When you think of the Special Olympics, swimming and basketball come to mind.

For some, however, it's hitting a strike.

The Special Olympics of Muscogee County hit the lanes on Wednesday afternoon.

Thirty athletes ages eight and up meet at the AMF Peach Lanes every Wednesday. They’re practicing in hopes of making it to the training phase for the South Georgia masters bowling competition this August in Warner Robins.

“We just had three athletes come back from winter games in Atlanta,” said sports coordinator Connie Sieg. “Those are your athletes that are 21 and under.”

Sieg started the bowling program in 1992 for her son. He was nominated to compete at the 2007 Special Olympics world games in Shanghai, China.

Bowling practices are year round, so people who are interested are welcome to join at any time.
